Service record has date of birth as 17 December 1894. DOB in Birth Deaths and Marriages Online is 17 December 1895, and it would appear that he put his age up in order to enlist. He served with 11 (Taranaki) Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion as Private 10/1824 from 4 January 1915 until 26 July 1916 when he was medically discharged as a result of a wound he received (gunshot wound right forearm) between 8 August and 9 August 1915 at Gallipoli. Joined the Australian Imperial Force on 12 April 1917.
