"Sergeant Charles Ancroft Elphick, son of Major E. E. . Elphick, of Christchurch, died suddenly in the military annexe, Auckland Hospital, early last evening, after a short illness. Prior to joining the army Sergeant Elphick was sub-editor of the New Zealand Farmer Weekly, a position which he had held since February, 1935. Previously he had been on the staff of a daily newspaper in Hastings.

He completed his education at Lincoln Agricultural College, and held several certificates in agricultural and pastoral subjects. An accomplished pianist, he was popular in social circles on the North Shore, his home being at Milford, where he had lived since coming to Auckland. When he went into the army last February he received his early training in the Rotorua district, and after a fortnight was selected for special training as an instructor of n.c.o.'s.

Following an intensive course at the Auckland district school of instruction, he was posted to a northern camp as a sergeant of the New Zealand Temporary Staff, and more recently he was instructing at a large mobilisation camp near Auckland. Sergeant Elphick, who was 30 years of age, leaves a wife but no children. His father, Major Elphick, M.R.C.V.S., who served in the Middle East in 1914-18, was assistant director of veterinary services, central military district.
