Sgt Pullinger was part of a Lancaster crew which was on a cross country sortie. It took off from Waddington, Lincolnshire. R5489 of 44sqn code KM-X, after 4 hours and close to landing, the pilot repo...rted to ATC that he had a fire on the inboard starboard engine, the flight engineer, whether in panic, or, something else, shut down the outer engine, the aircraft already had been trimmed for landing, the action caused the aircraft to stall and pitch badly, leading to the aircraft crashing at Branston village just a few miles from Waddington. The crash site at Branston where David was killed is currently being developed as a new housing estate. As a memorial to David one of the new streets will be given the name of Pullinger Way. Along wi...th all the rest of the crew both those killed and those who survived will also have a street named after each of them.
