Sub-Lieutenant (Acting) Edward de Aulton Hewetson was killed when the aircraft he was piloting, Chance Vought Corsair II Serial Nr. JT461 / Unit Code Nr. 7C, belonging to 1841 Naval Air Squadron of Fleet Air Arm crashed into a hilltop on Island of Hoy, Orkney Islands, Scotland in poor weather with low visibility. The aircraft had departed from RNAS Hatston [HMS Sparrowhawk] near Kirkwall and was due to land aboard HMS Formidable, an aircraft carrier, that was to take part in Operation Mascot, 17 July 1944, an operation against the German battleship Tirpitz moored in a Norwegian fjord. The pilot must have been flying & training in anticipation of this operaton whilst in Orkney. Wreckage of the aircraft remains at the crash site owing to remoteness & inaccessability.
