Ernest Henry Parker grew up in Archibald Road, New Lynn, the son of Hannah Maria Parker and William Parker. He attended New Lynn School and then worked in the brickworks and at Piha Mill. His enlistment shows he was not a big man - 5' 6" in height and weighing 10 stone. He went into the Canterbury Regiment and fought at Gallipoli. He suffered from a number of illnesses was taken to London then brought back to Egypt and sailed for the Western Front with the NZ Division. He was shot in the leg and thigh at the Somme and once again taken to hospital in Britain. He had scabies and clearly was worn down by his service. When he was at Codford Camp he developed cerebral meningitis and despite being hospitalised died from the disease and was buried at Tidford Military Cemetery.
