I've been able to access FM Cranston's Statement of Service record (attached). He enrolled 2/12/1915 (straight from school). He embarked on the Millochra on 31 May 1916 and arrived at Devonport on 26 June 1916. He was assigned to the 5th reserves battalion, A company. He departed for France on the Grantham (29 Sept 1916) arriving into camp at Etang (2 October 1916 marched into camp,) There are no other records that I have (apart from his Casualty Form which lists him as being in the NZ Machine Gun Corp, 2 Company on 16 June 1917). The records are not easy to read, and will contain short hand that others will be aware of their meaning (attached). His date of birth is 25 July 1897 (at the time of his death he was not yet 19).I know that the Auckland War Museum has his birth as 25 July 1895, but this is incorrect.
