Biographical Notes:

There was one death at Walton on Thames hospital on this day in 1918. This was 12/3940, Spr Frederick Henwood Bathurst, NZ Engineers who was born on 6 October 1890 in Ponsonby, Auckland. He was a Labourer living in Te Awamutu and single. He initially enlsted on 14 August 1914 into the Auckland Regiment but was discharged on 11 September 1914 as undesirable. He attested into the 10th Reinforcements on 16 November 1915 and left NZ on 4 March 1916 arriving in Suez on 10 April. He left again for France on 18 April arriving at Etaples on 24 April. He joined 2 Battalion Auckland Regiment on 25 May. He was attached to 1st Australian Tunnelling Company on 30 May, transferred to 3rd Company on 15 July and was hospitalised with influenza in August. He was sent to the UK with appendicitis arriving at New End Military Hospital, Hampstead on 1 October 1916 and then to the Depot at Codford on 12 October. He transferred to NZ Light Railways on 5 February 1917 and returned to France on 24 February. He spent time with Canadian Pioneers before being admitted to hospital with bronchitis on 17 December 1917. He was transferred to the UK arriving at Walton on Thames on 30 December suffering from Nephritis and died on 18 January 1918 of Acute Brights Disease and Acute Oedima Lungs. He was buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery on 18 January. ( Graham Grist - January 2021)
