Extract from the diary of Gunner Stephen Barnes, 50187. "April 18th, 1918...."Not seeing Gordon about I went looking for him and was grieved to find the poor old chap had been killed instantly by a "whizz bang" in a trench close to cookhouse. Assisted by another chap I carried him to a dug-out & took possession of his paybook, wallet and watch etc. His paybook and wallet was claimed by Sgt Major. His watch and badge etc. I intend sending to his Sister.............Fri 19th Poor old Gordon was buried today in Mil. cemetery at Rimy? ...........was unable to get leave to attend the funeral." Steve Barnes and Gordon Moir both joined the Artillery at the same time in Invercargill (April 1917) and seemed to be the greatest of mates until Gordon got killed.
