“Private Herbert Horace Ellis, killed in action, was the eldest son of Mrs W. Ellis, 79, Ollivier's Road, Linwood. He was born in Woolston twenty-six years ago and was educated at the Opawa School. Prior to enlisting with the Seventeenth Reinforcements, he was employed by Mr Campbell, Happy Valley Station, Scargill. He was well known in Christchurch as the custodian of the Union Rowing Club's sheds. He was a keen Volunteer, and was a member of the old Native Rifles, where he held the rank of sergeant.
