“OBITUARY
GROUP CAPTAIN JACK GOODHART
A cable message published in “The Press” on Wednesday recorded the death of Acting-Group Captain Jack Goodhart during a recent air raid on London. Group Captain Goodhart’s wife, son, and mother-in-law were also killed.
Group Captain Goodhart was born in Perth. Coming to New Zealand he was educated in Christchurch, attending the Opawa School and the Christchurch Boys’ High School. Later he became a student at Canterbury University College. Under a scheme for selecting New Zealand trainees for the Royal Air Force he was chosen as the Christchurch candidate in 1931, and since then he has served continuously overseas.
Group Captain Goodhart served with the Royal Air Force in many fields, and at one time was stationed at Malta. Subsequently he held a position at the headquarters of the Royal Air Force in Whitehall.
Before he went to England Group Captain Goodhart made a study of wireless, and aeronautics. He was also interested in swimming and boxing. Group Captain Goodhart was married in 1934. He was a son of Mrs H. A Goodhart, who is a resident of Opawa. His brother, Flying Officer G. O. Goodhart, is at present serving with the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the Middle East.” [Press, Volume LXXX, Issue 24167, 28 January 1944, Page 6]
