Biographical Notes:

"Mrs  Clarke,  Fraser  Street,  Temuka,  has received word  that  her  son,  Trooper James  Clarke,  died  in  Egypt  on  2nd  November,  from  malaria  and  dysentery.  The  late  Trooper  Clarke was  born  in  Ireland  and came  to  Temuka with  his  parents  at  an  early  age.  He  was  educated  in  Temuka, and  on  leaving school entered the employment  of  the late  John  Miles  (who  was  then  carrying  on  the  Stone Store) and learned the drapery business. Leaving Temuka he went to the North Island, and a few years ago took up surveying, and he was working with a survey party when he enlisted with the Auckland Mounted Rifles in July, 1915, going  away  with  the  20th  Reinforcements.  He   was  a  fine  type  of  young man, physically  and  mentally.  He  was  never  wounded  or  ill,  until  he  contracted  the  malaria that  has  ended  in  his  death.  He  is  the  second  member  of  the  family  to  lose his life in this war, Captain Peter Clarke having been killed in France at an earlier  period  of  it.  A brother  was  killed  in  the  South  African  war,  and  one  is  still at the front. Another, Jack, returned home about six months ago, wounded in the foot." [Temuka Leader, Issue 9798, 7 November 1918, Page 2]
