Biographical Notes:

"LIEUT. ALLAN 2nd Lieut. Allan, reported killed in action on March 27th, was the third son of Mr Geo. Allan, of Huntly. He enlisted from Greymouth very early in war, and left with the second reinforcement. He therefore has seen much service. He enlisted as a private, but his keenness and attention to duty soon marked him out for promotion, and step by step he rose until at his death he was 2nd Lieut. Lieut. Allan was 26 years of age and was married in Scotland. During his war service he was wounded three times. He was a young man well and deservedly respectedly, and his parents have been recipients of many letters, cards and telegrams of sympathy, besides of course the many personal expressions received from their many Huntly friends. Among the telegrams were those from Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, and the Minister for Defence, each of whom expressed deep regret at the death of their son. They also received a card from the Mayor and Councillors of Auckland city. From Liverpool, Govenor-general — I am commanded to inform you that the King and Queen deeply regret the loss you and the army have sustained by the death of Second Lieut. J. Allan in the service of his country. Their Majesties truly sympathise with you in your sorrow. From G. M. Hamilton, secretary to the Governor General — I am directed to convey to you an expression of Their Excellencies’ sincere sympyathy in the sad loss which you have suffered."
