Biographical Notes:

"An 18-year-old yachtsman, Samuel John Flaws, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Flaws,Rangiora Avenue, Kaiwarra, was drowned in Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon when an Idle Along yacht of which he was a member of the crew capsized about 400 yards off the southern point of Shelly Bay. It is understood that the two other members of the crew were wearing life-jackets, and succeeded in swimming to the shore, but Flaws did not possess one, and when he left the upturned yacht in an attempt to swim to the beach he found the distance too great. The body was not recovered, and today the police were still searching for it."
