Biographical Notes:

“The Hon. W. H. Herries has forwarded a cheque for £15 for extra comforts for the men in the Returned Soldiers' Hostel, which has been most welcome during the prevalence of the epidemic, enabling the committee to provide many things beyond the means of their ordinary revenue. The whole of the returned men and the staff were stricken, and only one death, Joseph Lucas, resulted from a long standing weakness brought about by wounds received on Gallipoli in 1914-15. Mr. Lucas was one of the first men who found a home in the old Newtown Hostel, and was loved by all who knew him.” [Evening Post, Volume XCVI, Issue 143, 13 December 1918, Page 3]
