"OBITUARY DR MATHEW HOLMES
All Wellington will he grieved to learn of the death of Dr. Mathew Holmes, of Upper Willis Street, which occurred yesterday afternoon, the cause being a severe attack of pneumonic influenza. Dr. Holmes was the son of Mr. James Holmes, of the Awamoa Stud Farm at Oamaru, and a nephew of Miss Holmes, of Hawkestone Street. He was educated in Oamaru, attended the High School at Dunedin, and took a course at the Otago University, after which he went Home and studied medicine at the Edinburgh University, where he had a brilliant career. He was afterwards appointed resident surgeon at the Chalmers Hospital for Children in Edinburgh, and gained much experience in children's complaints, for which he has been noted locally. Some nine or ten years ago he returned to Wellington, and set up in practice here, marrying Miss Elsie Rawson, daughter of Mr. Herbert P. Rawson of Seatoun. When war broke out Dr. Holmes offered his services to the Government, and was dispatched with our first Expeditionary  Force to Samoa. On his return he went forward with our forces to Sinai, Egypt, and Gallipoli, and saw a great deal of the worst of that ugly campaign.
Subsequently he was invalided back to New Zealand, and resumed practice here. Dr. Holmes contracted influenza a week ago, and succumbed to the disease in its deadliest form.
