“The distressing news has been received by Mr A. McPhee, of Kauri, of the death from wounds of his eldest son, Gunner Neil Allan McPhee. Information had come to hand only a few hours previously that Gunner McPhee had been wounded in the head, his skull being fractured, on October 22, and as death ensued on October 24 he survived his injuries for only two days. Gunner McPhee, who was 21 years old enlisted in Whangarei at the age of 20 and left New Zealand with the 14th Reinforcements.
