Biographical Notes:

Lieutenant Ernest Lawrence Schischka, of Waiwera, was killed and Private Paul Walters, of Wellsford, and formerly of Hokianga, was seriously injured when an army truck driven by Private Walters collided with the south-bound express at Wellsford at 8.45 today. Both were Home Guardsmen. Other members of the same unit escaped lightly, although the front of the truck was badly smashed.

Lieutenant Schischka was killed outright. Private Walters, whose condition is dangerous, was removed to a house after receiving medical treatment.
