My father, Jack Selwyn Parsons enlisted with Robert at the start of the conflict of World War II. Bob (as he was known) and Dad fought alongside each other until Bob was killed. My father would never... speak of what they lived through and what they witnessed and the only time I ever saw my Dad cry was when he would hear the last post played. All of my Dad's life he had a large framed picture of Bob beside his bed. When my Dad died I promised I would not let Bob's memory fade so I now have a large photo of Bob displayed in my home and tell guests the story behind the picture. I intend to visit his grave in Italy in the near future to pay my respects; I would not be here if not for Bob. My Dad was pinned down by enemy fire, Bob drew the fire giving Dad a chance to reach shelter, in the process Bob was wounded twice but he refused to stop giving covering fire continuing to give Dad a chance to ultimately reach shelter, however as Dad reached cover, Bob was shot a third time which ultimately proved fatal. I have just read the story on Jack Selwyn Parsons and never realised this was the gentleman that my uncle saved in the war. I always knew my uncle died saving a mate but never knew his name.
