Thomas was the eldest son of Richard K Ross and May Ross, Richmond Plains, Victoria. He travelled to NZ to work as an accountant for the Commercial Bank in Christchurch at around the age of 23 years. Enlisting at the age of 26 he served in Gallipoli with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and in a letter to home he wrote from the transport ship leaving the Peninsula "I was one of the six chosen to hold the trenches after the rest left for the life boats, the positions a much coveted honour several of the men offering to change places with me. It was while in the last shift I got a bullet from a sniper going through the lobe of my left ear. I was looking over the sandbags trying to locate the sniper's position when he 'pinked' me. It was only a trifling wound and he could not have hit me in a better place though he has earmarked me like an old sheep....We will have our Christmas dinner here on the transport. It is a fine boat, we are very comfortable and the food is excellant." He was appointed Lance Corporal 20th September 1917. Unfortunately he was seriously wounded in action (gun shot wounds to the head) on the 5th November 1917 and died on the 8th November 1917 in the 43 Stationery Hospital at Kantara. Two brothers also served, Ronald Ross (AIF, killed in action 14/11/1916 at the Battle of Gueudecourt), and Daniel Ross (AIF, returned to Australia in 1919).
