Biographical Notes:

"The body of Private William Peebles, aged 24, of Ngaruawahia, was recovered from the Waikato River on Friday afternoon and an inquest held by Mr F. Harris, coroner, of Huntly, in the evening, when a verdict of accidental death was returned. Private Peebles was a member of the Guard of Vital Points, and he was drowned on Sunday, February 23. Constables P. Clemence and G. F. Atkins, of Ngaruawahia, located the body in the river about half a-mile below the spot where he disappeared. Private Peebles was accorded a military funeral at Ngaruawahia on Saturday afternoon."
