Military Cross Citation: His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Military Cross to 8678 Temporary Captain William Camille Butland, 21st New Zealand Battalion, 5th New Zealand Infantry Brigade, 2nd New Zealand Division for outstanding devotion to duty. This officer was a Liason Officer in Greece and Crete. In Crete particularly, at Maleme, he showed great initiative and courage in contacting his unit when it was surrounded and communications with his Brigade were cut off. During these operations he was constantly sniped but never failed to make progress and achieve his objective. He has been Adjutant of his unit since December 1941. During the withdrawl from Mersa Matruh to Alamein from the end of June to early August 1942, he kept continuous touch with all companies, often at considerable personal risk. He took part in the attack on Ruweisat Ridge on July 14/15 1942 and during the night, with his batman, captured about thirty prisoners. He contacted the Battalion in position on the Ridge in the morning and then through a heavy enemy barrage reported back to Brigade. During the day he repeatedly tried to take supplies up to the Companies and late in the afternoon succeded in doing so despite continuous shelling and machine gun fire. On all occasions in action this officer has displayed high personal courage and initiative, unselfish disregard of personal safety, and outstanding devotion to duty.
