Captain

Patrick Stanley Vaughan Heenan

Additional Information:

Son of George Charles Heenan and of Anne Heenan, of Cheam, Surrey.

NZ WAR GRAVES

Biographical Notes:

There is some evidence that Captain Heenan was charged with spying for the Japanese, court-martialled and sentenced to death in January 1942. There is some doubt, due to poor communications, that the sentence of death was ever confirmed. The story goes that on Friday 13th February, two days before Singapore surrendered, he was taken down to the quayside by military policemen after they had decided to unofficially carry out the sentence. After being shot in the head his body was pushed into the sea. The date of death (15 February, 1944) used by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is the date when all those missing in the fall of Singapore were offically accepted as being dead.
