Biographical Notes:

"A bathing fatality occurred on the Devonport beach this afternoon. The victim was Corporal Charles John O'Brien, aged 41. married, Onehunga.

A few moments after he had entered the water it was seen that O'Brien was in difficulties. Corporal Alex James Pollock went to his assistance immediately and found him floating face downward on the water. O'Brien was brought ashore, but artificial respiration failed."
