Biographical Notes:

Flying a Ventura from RNZAF Whenuapai, on a radio navigation exercise, the plane collided with a C-47 of Whenuapai’s Transport Training and Conversion Flight, which was heading for the same radio beacon. Instructing the 4 crew to bale out, William attempted to fly the aircraft, but crashed onto a small rise near Kaukapakapa. The pilot of the C-47, Flt Lt. D. L Bade managed to land the plane, despite losing part of a wing, and was awarded the AFC in recognition of his airmanship.
