William Richard Higgs Bowden was killed in action on Messines Ridge aged 24 years old. He left behind his pregnant wife Katherine and young daughter in Wellington for a "bit of adventure" with his older brother Tom. Tom returned but Will - aka "Smiler" did not. My Grandmother was born 6 months after his departure and was always known as "Billy" as the baby was to be named after his Father if it was a boy. In June 1917 Katherine went to the Wellington Post Office to collect the War Pay. The cashier rudely told her "We don't pay out for dead men". This was how she learnt of her husband's death. The telegram was on it's way to her house and they had crossed paths. Gone but not forgotten - your legacy lives on.
