Previously served as Corporal in the Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry for 4 years, discharged in 1912. He joined up at Hamilton, New Zealand on the 13th August 1914. After he had completed training, he was posted to the  Mediterranean to join his regiment. On the 8th August 1915 while in action at the Dardanelles he received a gun shot to his head which fractured his skull . He was treated for his injuries on the field and later invalided to a hospital in Malta on Hospital Ship, Valdivia. He died of his wounds in Malta on the 25th August 1915. He was born on the 4th October 1888 and baptised on the 4th October 1888 at Goole, Yorkshire to Thomas Coates of 23 Grosvenor Road, Scarborough, Yorkshire who was his next of kin. His mother Betsy died in 1889 aged 43. He father later remarried to Emily Jane Tallents. On the 3rd February 1912 he left London for Wellington, New Zealand on passenger ship Athenic, occupation, farmer. ( Paul Foster)
