Biographical Notes:

“FALLEN AND WOUNDED. ~ RIFLEMAN W. M. FAULLS. Rifleman W. M. Faulls (killed in action) was the youngest son of Mrs M. Faulls, of Walters Road, Marshland, and was 20 years of age. He was born at Richmond, but spent practically all his life in Marshland, where he received his education. Prior to his enlistment in the Earl of Liverpool's Own he was engaged in farming pursuits, he was well known in sporting circles throughout Canterbury, especially as a cyclist and a sprinter. In 1912 he won the Kaiapoi Derby for youths under 18 years of age. He won foot races at the Woodend sports and as far south as Geraldine. He played cricket for the St. Albans team, which won the fourth grade competition in 1911. He was a good footballer, and played for the local club and also for the Belfast Club. The flag at the Marshland School was flown half-mast when it was learned that he had been killed, and the patriotic dance, which was to have taken place at Marshland on Wednesday evening, was postponed.“ [Sun (Christchurch), Volume III, Issue 830, 7 October 1916, Page 8]
