Biographical Notes:

"A returned soldier, Private Arthur Robert Gardner, committed suicide by hanging himself at the Occidental Hotel to-night. The deceased, who was 20 years of age, returned on February 28th, after a year’s active service with the Auckland Infantry. A month later he was discharged on account of wounds. His mother resides at Ohutu, Taihape, and among papers found on the deceased’s body was a letter imploring the deceased to leave town and come home, as she did not want him to get into bad company.
