Biographical Notes:

"A returned soldier, Private Arthur Robert Gardner, committed suicide by hanging himself at the Occidental Hotel to-night. The deceased, who was 20 years of age, returned on February 28th, after a year’s active service with the Auckland Infantry. A month later he was discharged on account of wounds. His mother resides at Ohutu, Taihape, and among papers found on the deceased’s body was a letter imploring the deceased to leave town and come home, as she did not want him to get into bad company. Gardner had complained lately of terrible pains in the head." [Nelson Evening MailL, VolumeLIII, Issue 116, 17 May 1919, Page 3]
