Biographical Notes:

Since we photographed him name on the Runnymede Memorial, we have discovered that he has a grave (VI. G. 7 (Coll.)) in Hotton War Cemetery in Belgium, where he was reburied, likely from a local burial, in 1955. A new image will be added to the record, when available.

PAPATOETOE RESIDENT SERVING SINCE OCTOBER RECONNAISSANCE DUTIES

Advice that Pilot-Officer Croydon J. E. Chamberlain, only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Chamberlain, had been reported missing as a result of Tuesday's aerial activity on the Western Front, was recived by Mrs. Chamberlain, Huia Road, Papatoetoe, yesterday. Pilot-Officer Chamberlain had been engaged on reconnaissance photographic work with the British Expeditionary Force in France since October. Twenty years of age, Pilot-Officer Chamberlain left New Zealand to join the Royal Air Force on a short-service commission in October, 1937. Educated at the Pukekohe High School, where he matriculated, he was a member of the first Rugby fifteen, a member of the school's shooting team and a prefect. He was also a sergeant in the school cadet battalion and took a prominent part in dramatic and choral work. Pilot-Officer Chamberlain was employed by A. S. Paterson and Company, Limited, for some months before joining the Air Force.
