Biographical Notes:

Wife deceased by 18/03/1918 and next-of-kin changed to Mrs A MacGregor, Falkland House, Gloucester, England. However, there was a son, Master Vincent Payne Freeman, whose address is given (after mother's death) as c/- Mrs J P Brandon, Waerenga Road, Otaki, New Zealand. Son, according to notes in the service record, was still in New Zealand in 1922. In a letter from the wife's mother (J P Brandon and in the service record and dated 24/12/1921) she states that the two children are living with her in Otaki - there is also a daughter Mary Moore Freeman. “Lieut. Douglas Freeman, of the Australian Imperial Forces, who was killed in action in France on the 26th of September, was in the service of the Western Australian Government when war was declared, and immediately volunteered for active service. He had previously seen service in the Boer War. On Lieut. Freeman leaving for the front his wife came over with her two little children to stay with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Brandon, of Lyall Bay, Wellington, and died a few months after her arrival.” [Evening Post, Volume XCIV, Issue 91, 15 October 1917, Page 8]
