Biographical Notes:

“Cabled advice has been received that Staff Sergt. Ernest T. Rhind [sic] was killed in action on December 15. Sergt. Rhind was the fifth son of Mrs Rhind, sen., of Lyttelton, and the late Mr A. Rhind. A younger brother, Corporal Hector Rhind, was killed in action in France some months ago, after having served through the Gallipoli campaign. An elder brother is Sergt. Harold Rhind, who was awarded the D.C.M. for service at Gallipoli, and who was severely wounded in the chest. Another brother, Private C. E. Rhind, has seen service at the front, and is at present in a convalescent camp in France, recovering from trench fever. Yet another brother is serving in the Motar [sic] Boat Patrol. Staff-Sergt. Ernest Rhind enlisted in, and left New Zealand with the 7th Reinforcement. In addition to meritorious service rendered by soldier members of the family, several of the lady members have improved the record by service as nurses. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Rhind, sen., who has suffered heavily by the self-sacrificing devotion of her family to the cause of the Empire in the great war.” [Sun (Christchurch), Volume IV, Issue 1217, 5 January 1918, Page 4 (Supplement)]
