Biographical Notes:

An illness extending over 18 months ended in the Cook Hospital late yesterday with the death of Mr Frederick William Nelson. Born in the Wellington district on years ago, Mr. Nelson was with the New Zealand forces in the last war. and when he returned to New Zealand took up farming at Tokorou, in the Rotorua district, and married Miss Rose Schwabe at Te Awamutu. They have lived in Gisborne for the past 20 years. When the present war broke out. Mr. Nelson was employed at the Cook Hospital, and joined the National Military Reserve, with whom he went to camp when the Japanese entered the war nearly two years ago. He was in camp for only a few months when he took ill, and since then has been in hospital in both Gisborne and Wellington, undergoing several operations. He returned to Gisborne only last week.  He took an active part in the activities around him, and was a member of the Mangapapa School Committee for some years and also a member or the first committee formed in connection with the Gisborne Intermediate School. He had been a member of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows for many years, and was a past officer of the Gisborne lodge. Surviving him to mourn their loss are his wife, three sons and one daughter, Mr. Donald Nelson, Dunedin.
