Biographical Notes:

Enlisted with a Captain Hughes in Christchurch and embarked  alongside the 2nd Contingent according to letters in Archway records. His mother (then widowed) found about his death through an obituary in the Otago Times. Family letters suggest that she had no contact for some time and did not know that he was serving in South Africa.
