Biographical Notes:

"Lieutenant George Simpson, of the South Wales Borderers, whose death in action is reported from France, was at one time in the maintenance branch of the New Zealand Railways. Some ten years or more ago he left New Zealand to try his luck in the Argentine, and there entered the service of one of the big railway companies, and in a comparatively short period he attained a high position on the company's staff. On the outbreak of the war he left for England, and enlisted in the Imperial Army, first joining the Life Guards, but - in order to see more fighting - later transferred to the South Wales Borderers. With his regiment, Lieutenant Simpson participated in General Byng's sensational drive at Cambrai last year, and was wounded in the desperate fighting at the famous Bourlon Wood. Lieutenant Simpson, who was well known in Taranaki, was the elder son of Mr. W. J. Simpson, of Eastbourne." [Dominion, Volume 11, Issue 312, 21 September 1918, Page 6]

The Cambrai Bell of the Carillon, Wellington is dedicated to George Simpson. The dedication reads "Cambrai, In memory of George Simpson. Given by his father, William James Simpson and family." George Simpson also served with the New Zealand 10th Contingent in the South African War.
