"Mr Hammond, of Briscoe and Co., Ltd., has received word that his brother, Major H. H. Hammond, has been missing since August 9th. Major Hammond is a single man, about 35 years of age. He is a son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Hammond, of Leeston, and was captain of the Ellesmere Mounted Rifles. When war broke out he was on Mr Claude Coe's sheep station at Waiau, and immediately volunteered, going out as captain of the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He was thrice wounded at Gallipoli and finally invalided for a time to England. He was promoted Major for his services, and has since been through the Egyptian fighting, and has evidently been missing since the Katia action.
