Biographical Notes:

"Lieutenant Hubert Ernest Le Cren, killed in action on 26th August, was the eldest son of Mrs. Le Cren, of Kensington street. Lieutenant Le Cren was 26 years of age. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, Wellington College (of which he was a prefect), and Dunedin High School. He was for some time, employed in the Native Lands Department, but subsequently entered the legal profession. He volunteered at the outbreak of the war, and joined the Samoan Contingent, but was invalided home. He was engaged on home service for some time, and secured a commission as second lieutenant. He again left New Zealand with the 3lst Reinforcement. He took a keen interest in athletic sports, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. His father, Mr. E. A. Le Cren, was killed two years ago in the Somme battle. Mrs. Le Cren's only remaining son is dangerously ill in France." [Evening Post, Volume XCVI, Issue 64, 12 September 1918, Page 7]
