"Second Lieutenant Humphrey Gilbert Machell, who died of wounds in France on June 12, was the younger son of Mr. And Mrs. Hugh Machell and grandson of the late Canon and the Hon. Mrs. Machell, of York. Educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton, and King's College, Cambridge, he was called to the Bar in 1913, and early in 1914 was given a legal appointment under the British South Africa Company at Livingstone, Northhern Rhodesia, where his services were highly valued. In 1917, at the end of the three years for which he had pledged himself to the company, he gave up his appointment, and, returning to England, joined the Inns of Court O.T.C., receiving a commission in the Border Regiment last January." “Second Lieutenant Humphrey. G. Machell, who is reported to have died in France on May 12 [correct date June 12 - NZWGT], was the youngest son of Mr. H. L. Machell, of the staff of Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett, Tripp and Blair. He and his eldest brother (2nd Lieutenant L. Machell) were in the Border Regiment, which had been raised and trained about a year ago and was let into action by their uncle, Colonel Machell.
