"Fritz keeps up his hard shelling in the morning and his trench inspector aeroplanes are busy scouting around. Our gun battery is not 50 yards away and draws fire. The trench has practically no protection and it is a surprise our casualties are so low. My esteemed comrade, Jimmy Whittem, dropped dead in his trench, presumably from heart failure. My word, he was a loveable fellow, adored by the whole company. He is to be buried tomorrow." [Trafford (2020) p108]
