Biographical Notes:

"While flying on a bombing expedition on June 26 last, Lieutenant James Robert Dennistoun, North Irish Horse, attached to the Royal Flying Corps, met with misfortune; his biplane caught fire, and he was obliged to descend in the enemy's lines, the result being that he was taken prisoner. With the pilot was his cousin. Lieutenant H. B. Russell of the Royal Field Artillery, attached to the RFC.; the latter is still a prisoner in German hands; he, too, was wounded. Now we have heard of the death of Lieutenant Dennistoun, as a result of the wounds he sustained in connection with his last flight. He died on August 9, at Ohrdruf, Thuringia. Much sympathy will be felt with his parents, Mr and Mrs G. J. Dennistoun, Peel Forest, Canterbury. The young officer had had a good deal of experience in various directions. He was awarded the King's Antarctic Medal; also that of the Royal Geographical Society, in recognition of his services with the Scott Antarctic Expedition, 1910-11. He was a well-known climber, and a member of the Alpine Club. He came to England to complete his education at Malvern College, previous to which he had been at Wanganui. On the outbreak of war he came to England, and very soon was posted to a commission in the North Irish Horse, and was quartered at Antrim Castle. In November, 1915, he went to the front; the next month he became intelligence officer for a certain division, and he held that exacting post for a couple of months. Not long after, he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps, and in the middle of July was gazetted among the missing. His brother, Lieutenant-commander G. H. Dennistoun. D.S.O., R.N., has done valuable work out in Africa." [Otago Daily Times, Issue 16835, 26 October 1916, Page 6]
