Biographical Notes:

"Rarely does a newspaper answer its own advertisement, but for the querulous "Sydney Morning Herald" is reserved this uncommon distinction. In it's issue of Monday, April 8, the "Personal and Missing Friends" column contained an advertisement running: Tpr. James Swale, New Zealand forces, left Garrison Hospital Wednesday last, or anyone knowing whereabouts, left arm amputated below elbow, kindly communicate Tpr. Terrill, Forbes-street, Redfern. And in another column in the same issue was a paragraph stating: The body of a man, subsequently identified as James Swale, aged 29, a. member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, was found floating in a duck-pond at Centennial Park. A few weeks ago Swale met with a train accident at Liverpool which necessitated the amputation of an arm."

His service record states that the coroner, in Australia, found that his death was  "wilfully caused".
