Biographical Notes:

 "Lieutenant John McGowan (killed in action) was a son of the late Mr R. S. M. McGowan, who was for many years manager of the Government Life Insurance Department in Dunedin. He was born in Dunedin, and was in his 20th year. After attending school in Dunedin he went to England about six years ago to continue his education at Sherborne School, Dorset, and was there when the call to arms came, and he enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment."
