Biographical Notes:

"A large and enthusiastic gathering of Kairanga and Newbury settlers took place in the Kairanga Hall last night to bid farewell to Private Joe Small, of Newbury, and Private Arthur Kilgour, of Kairanga. Mr D. Collis presided, and the hall was very tastefully decorated for the occasion by the ladies of the district. Mr J. A. Nash made presentations of wristlet watches to the departing soldiers, and gave an inspiring address on the war, which was received with applause. An enjoyable concert programme was given, the contributors being Mrs Pearce, Messrs J. Linklater. Morgan. O’Callaghan (songs), while Russian and Japanese dances were given by Misses Morgan and McKenzie, and a recitation by Mrs Morgan. A number of musical items were also rendered by members of the Awapuni Camp Orchestra.  A delightful supper was served by the ladies, and dancing followed, for which the music was supplied by Mrs McKenzie and Private Small.
