Biographical Notes:

“LIEUT.-COMMANDER N. W. PRYDE Unofficial advice that their son, Surgeon Lieutenant-commander N. W. Pryde, R.N.V.R., has been killed in action has been received by Mr and Mrs T. Pryde, McMaster street, Invercargill. Only last week it was reported that he had been promoted to the rank of surgeon lieutenant-commander. Surgeon Lieutenant-commander Pryde attended the Southland Boys’ High School and Otago University. He went to England eight years ago and took postgraduate courses in London. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, serving in naval hospitals in England and Scotland before being posted to an aircraft carrier in May, 1941. A year ago he was transferred to shore duty, but later joined the naval commandos and was stationed in Scotland. Cabled advice stating that the Admiralty had reported his death in action was received from a friend in London. While at the University, Surgeon Lieutenant-commander Pryde played as halfback for the University A Rugby team, and he was also selected for the New Zealand Universities’ team which toured Australia. He would have been 33 years of age next week. He married about two and a-half years ago, but his wife died in June last year.” [Otago Daily Times, Issue 25303, 13 August 1943, Page 6]

He was a member of the Merivale Football Club.” [Press, Volume LXXIX, Issue 24078, 14 October 1943, Page 4]
