Biographical Notes:

Rifleman Ronald Ambrose Whitelock, 2 Battalion NZ Rifle Brigade who was born on 16 April 1896, in England ,Yorkshire. He was a Labourer living in Aorangi, Fielding and single when he attested into the 25th Reinforcements at Palmerston North on 8 January 1917. He left NZ on 26 May 1917 arriving in Devonport on 20 July at Sling the same day. He left for France on 6 September 1917 arriving at Etaples on 9 September where he joined his battalion on 16 September. He was wounded on 12 October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele suffering a gunshot wound to his neck being admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance and No 44 Casualty Clearing Station the same day. He was admitted to No 3 Australian General Hospital on 13 October and left for the UK on 21 October being admitted to the City of London Military Hospital at Clapton the same day. He was transferred to Walton on Thames hospital on 1 December and on 8 January 1918 he was found to be unfit for further service and placed on the roll of those to be returned to NZ. He died of his wounds and an aneurysm on 24 February 1918 and buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery on 27 February. [Graham Grist Feb 2021}
