Biographical Notes:

"FLIGHT SERGEANT R. J. M. BELL Advice was recently received by Mr and Mrs Garnet G. Bell, of Matamata, of the death of their elder son, Flight-Sergeant Ronald James McLean Bell, on returning from a raid over Germany. Flight-Sergeant Bell was born in Matamata 22 years ago and was educated at the Matamata District High School and later at the New Plymouth Boy’s High School, where he was a house and school prefect. He attended the Auckland University College in 1941. After a year in the Army he entered the Air Force and left New Zealand in August, 1943, for Canada, where he gained his wings as a bomb-aimer in March, 1944. He crossed to England in April, 1944, and has since been flying in heavy bombers. Flight-Sergeant Bell’s younger brother, Sub-Lieutenant Peter Garvin Bell, aged 20, was killed in naval operations last October." [Waikato Times, Volume 106, Issue 22613, 19 May 1945, Page 6]
