Biographical Notes:

“Two more families, neighbours living on Tudor Road, Pahiatua, were plunged into grief yesterday afternoon. when within an hour, the horrors of war were brought home to each. [The other casualty was Bertram Willoughby Legg.] Mr Thos. Bacon was officially advised that his eldest eon. Signaller Thos. Reginald Bacon, of the Sixth Reinforcements, had been killed in action, somewhere in France, on 15th August. The late Signaller Bacon was 21 years of age. He was born in Masterton, and educated at the Pahiatua District High School. Prior to enlisting, he was employed as a cabinetmaker at Mr A. Pringle’s establishment. Upon the outbreak of the war, deceased was one of the first in this district to volunteer, and was included in the first batch of recruits that left Pahiatua in 1914. It subsequently transpired at Masterton, that along with some others, he was under age, and his services were not then accepted. Deceased, however, lost none of his enthusiasm, and when a favourable opportunity presented itself, he again enlisted, being eager to serve his country. As a lad. he joined the original Boy Scouts, and subsequently belonged to the Territorials. Deceased was a member of both the Presbyterian Church and the Ancient Order of Foresters. The father is at present an inmate of the Pahiatua Public Hospital. The late Signaller Bacon had earned the esteem and respect of all those with whom he came in contact.” [Pahiatua Herald, Volume XXI, Issue 5522, 30 August 1916, Page 4]
