Biographical Notes:

“Corporal William Pollock, who was killed in action on August 30, was the eldest son of Mr D. Pollock, Derwent street, Oamaru (late of Southland). He was in his twenty-eighth year, and was married. He was educated at the Outram School, afterwards adopting farming. He was a prominent member of the Murihiku and North Otago Mounted Rifles. He enlisted at Oamaru, and after spending seven months in camp, sailed | with the 27th N.Z.R.B. He was wounded in the knee on November 18, and after recovering went to the Base Camp in France as a physical drill instructor, and in June was classed as fit for a return to the firing line. At the date of his last letter he was in the Entrenching Battalion. His only brother is in the Machine Gun Section in France.“ [Otago Witness, Issue 3367, 25 September 1918, Page 42]
