South African War

Text:

The South African War (or Second Anglo-Boer War) was the culmination of long-standing tensions between the Dutch descended Boers and the British colonists in southern Africa. Fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Boer South African Republic (Transvaal) and its Orange Free State ally, it was the first overseas conflict to involve New Zealand troops.

Over the almost three years of the war New Zealand sent over six thousand men in 10 contingents and, officially, 13 nurses. A number of New Zealand men and women served in British, Australian, and other forces.

Of those that died over half died from disease. Where known we have included those that died in service with non-New Zealand forces.
