Biographical Notes:

The Harper brothers

Among those who fought at Romani were Gordon and Robin Harper, brothers from Christchurch. The best of friends, the brothers farmed together and when war broke out they fought together, first at Gallipoli and then in the Sinai campaign. During the final stages of the Battle of Romani Gordon was severely wounded while covering the retreat of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. When Robin heard the news he rode to his brother under heavy fire, put him across his horse and rode to safety. Despite Robin’s efforts, Gordon died of his wounds three days later.
