Biographical Notes:

“Yesterday afternoon, after returning from a motor ride, the wife of William Tilsley, a returned soldier and taxi-driver at Te Aroha, went to the bathroom, and while attempting to remove the plug collapsed and fell into the bath. When the husband discovered her a few minutes later life was extinct. About seven p.m. the deceased’s eldest brother, Alfred Hines, a returned soldier  was sitting in his chair at home nursing a young baby when he collapsed and expired. Both the deceased were highly respected, being daughter and son of Robert Hines, a well-known settler of Te Aroha West. The fatalities cast quite a gloom over the whole district. Inquests will be held.” [Ohinemuri Gazette, Volume XXXI, Issue 4105, 16 April 1920, Page 2]

“At the inquest into the death of Mrs. Charlotte Tilsley, who was found dead in a bath on Thursday afternoon, a verdict was returned that death was due to drowning while in a weak state of health. There was no evidence showing how the deceased got into the bath. Another inquest was held concerning the death of Mrs. Tilsley's brother, Robert Alfred Hines, who died four hours after his sister's death. The medical evidence showed that death was due to cerebral haemorrhage of the brain, probably caused by shock and war services. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.” [New Zealand Herald, Volume LVII, Issue 17448, 19 April 1920, Page 6]
